Commercial Truck Warranties can be a challenge

understanding truck warranties blog
If you bought your commercial truck brand new from an OEM dealer, it came with a warranty – a statement that clearly outlines what the manufacturer expectations are for their product.

Great, yes we all know that. But, when it comes to understanding warranty coverages you need to stay on top of deadlines (such as years of service or mileage limitations) to make sure you get everything you can from your warranty.

But…what do you do when that original warranty runs out, or you purchased a used truck that is beyond the original warranty parameters? As a Certified Dealership for many OEM brands, our teams have the expertise you can count on to keep your truck covered.

If you are under the original warranty – know your limitations and work closely with your dealer to get any warrantable work taken care of before it runs out.

  • Mileage plays a key role in warranty limits. Understanding your route mileage will help you better plan for specific equipment checks before its too late.
  • If you don’t hit the mileage limits due to low mileage routes, keep the original purchase date in mind, as that is the warranty start date, the second key component to warranty limits.
warranty tip 2

If you are purchasing a used truck, seek clarity on remaining warranties before you purchase extended warranties or service contracts. You don’t want to pay extra for something that may not be needed…yet.

warranty tip 3

Extended warranties and service contracts are different. Only the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) can offer a warranty. There are many 3rd parties that sell service contracts, but this is not a warranty. A service contract covers repairs and/or maintenance for a set period of time. An extended warranty is something that is offered by the OEM, meant to provide additional coverage at a set cost, and requires work to be done by a certified OEM dealership.n

warranty tip 4

No matter which you have – the original warranty, extended OEM warranty or a service contract, be sure you understand what is and is not covered, and the situations that may affect that coverage.

warranty tip 5

Finally – know who to contact when the inevitable happens or you have a driver broken down. This will keep the claims and repair process moving so you can get back on the road.
