It’s not just about your dog – there’s benefits for you too. Taking the dog along will force you to get out of the truck for potty breaks, play time and much needed exercise. They get the chance to spend time with their human and not be stressed with dog sitters and kennels. The companionship on long hauls is great for both of you. But to focus on your pup, think about the following recommendations gathered from drivers that travel with dogs.
Before you hit the road, check on company pet policies – there may be restrictions on size and breed that you can have in the rig with you. Many breeds can lend themselves to the protector – smart, loyal and alert to any trouble quickly can be comforting.
Be sure you have a way to secure your pup in the truck and keep them safe. Even an unexpected hard brake can cause injuries to an unrestrained pet.
Whether it’s their first time or their hundreth, help reduce stress and anxiety with their favorite blanket and toy.
Carry a pet first aid kit with some essentials to help ensure you can take care of any minor issues.

Understand idling policies of your company. Hot weather means keeping the A/C running for the dog while you’re away from your truck.
ALWAYS use a leash when outside the truck to keep your dog safe from other drivers and other pets that may not be properly restrained.
Keep plenty of bags on hand to clean up after your pet. Those handy “pet clean-up stations” are empty many times, so don’t rely on them. No one wants to step in an unexpected pile and track it into their truck.
Keep a vacuum handy to ensure you and your pup have a clean, tidy environment to travel in. Empty trash frequently so your furry friend doesn’t curiously nose into something they shouldn’t.
Carry plenty of food and water, especially if you have a picky eater – viable pet stores and groceries can be few and far between, and not all stores carry the same brands. Also keep the bowls clean to limit the chance of infection.
Keep up with vet visits and carry your pet’s medical records and vaccine history with you in case of emergencies on the road.
Consider pet insurance – while we try to be safe drivers, being on the road can be hazardous not just for you but for your pet. Talk to your veterinarian for recommendations.
